So this happened a few days ago, and the number keeps going up. I wanted to share with you how I feel about this milestone in Dirk’s illustrious career to this point.
On April 1st against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Dirk scored his 28,000-career point. In retrospect, it has been unbelievable to witness what Dirk has accomplished over the years. If you look at the top 10 all time scorer’s in the NBA, Nowitzki has been 7th this year, but reaching the 28k point club is another accomplishment in itself. His consistency on the court, and the team’s consistency have been rare, exceeded by only the San Antonio Spurs. The Dallas Mavericks have reached the playoffs in 14 of the past 15 years, reached 2 NBA Finals appearances, and Dirk has had several accolades along the way.
Watching the young German prospect hit the court has been a great ride. The Mavericks were at the bottom of the NBA throughout the 90’s, and fortunes turned with Dirk growing at the helm. Personally, I have had things I like and don’t like about Dirk’s game as a fan. One thing that has been consistent with him has been his work ethic, dedication, personality, and accessibility. Sometimes as fans we forget that Dirk is 7ft tall. He is a pioneer of the stretch 4. Dirk even can drive to the rim (which I feel makes him the most dangerous). The arguments have been ongoing for the past few years on whether he is the greatest international player of all time. Statements can be made for many who have come and gone like Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, Yao Ming, etc. The same statements can be made for Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki. Congratulations to Dirk Nowitzki for reaching the 28,000-point club.
