Atlanta Hawks Revolutionizing Court Side

Earlier this week through twitter, news broke that the Atlanta Hawks are going to add a court side bar to their arena layout. I’ve attached an image of what it will look like and I wonder, is this smart? Dr. Buss brought in cheerleaders to the league, others have brought many significant great things to the NBA arena atmosphere as well. This though feels like something that will take away from the game. Yes, teams do have bars and clubhouses that overlook the court. Also, the suites are utilized throughout the year where a lot of people don’t even watch the games in the seats they have available. But a court side bar just seems so gimmicky. You want the lower level of an arena to have the buzz and the loudness, and the true fans. Yes, those really expensive seats are held by those who don’t care the majority of the time, but even those can hold some fans. This prime bar area will be nice for a season except for when a basketball comes at you. Also, we don’t know the pricing but premium level seats are removed by doing this and those fans not only buy beer, chips, soda, and food, but they can also pay for those tickets. The cost-benefit to me doesn’t make too much sense, but hey, people have been wrong in the past, and this could be the next thing for arenas, even if it takes away from the true fans…
