Fact 1: Dallas owned the rights to the Redskins Fight Song for a brief time
This might not be too unfamiliar to Cowboys fans but yes, Clint Murchison Jr. bought the rights to the Redskins fight song and basically bribed Redskins owner George Marshall to approve a professional football team in Dallas. Hence, the Dallas Cowboys were born in 1960.
Fact 2: The Cowboys had several ideas for a team name before settling with Cowboys
When the franchise was formed in 1960, the team went with the name Steers then Rangers. But fortunately for us, they settled with the name Cowboys.
Fact 3: Dallas recorded an impressive 20 season winning streak
From 1966 to 1985 all Dallas did was win. They went to 5 Super Bowls in that time frame. Appeared in 12 NFC Championship games and provided several Hall of Famers and All Pros during this time. During this time they missed the playoffs only 1 time in 1974. The only team to come close to this dominance and that is the New England Patriots from 2001 to 2019. If they have an above .500 year this year, they would have matched Dallas.
Fact 4: Longest Playoff Drought is 6 Seasons
Yep, the Cowboys have never gone more than 6 seasons without missing the post season. The team from 1960-1965 missed the playoffs and was a expansion team to start. Then from 1986-1990 during the rebuild, and finally from 2010-2013 under the transition from Wilson to Garrett. Unfortunately, the longest the team has gone not appearing in an NFC Championship game has gone from a 9 season drought (1982-1991) to now a 24 season drought (1996-Present).
Fact 5: Longest Tenured Assistant Coaches
Jim Myers based on my research was the longest tenured assistant coach of the Dallas Cowboys. He was with the team from 1962-1986. He went from offensive line coach to offensive coordinator, then finally assistant head coach. Ernie Stautner was on the team from 1966-1989, but in 1989 he was a scout for the team. Both these men left a lasting impression along with Landry on the Cowboys.
Fact 6: Only 3 First Overall First Round Picks
Ed “Too Tall” Jones was the Cowboys first ever #1 overall pick in the first round. They drafted him in 1974. Since the team started in 1960, they never had the #1 overall pick until then. Since that time, the Cowboys have only selected 2 other first overall picks in the first round. One was Hall of Famer Troy Aikman in 1989, and the other was Russell Maryland in 1990.
